Client Overview

Feldschlösschen, a leading beverage company in Switzerland, is renowned for its commitment to sustainability. Each year, Feldschlösschen supplies over 7,000 events across Switzerland with beer and non-alcoholic drinks, constantly seeking innovative solutions to minimize their environmental impact.

Challenge

Despite their extensive efforts to reduce CO2 emissions across their value chain, Feldschlösschen faced a significant challenge: the widespread use of disposable plastic cups at events. These single-use plastics contribute substantially to environmental pollution and waste.

Solution

In 2022, Feldschlösschen partnered with Arboloom, a Biel-based startup specializing in the production of compostable wooden cups. Founded in 2021 as a spin-off from Creaholic, Arboloom aims to replace paper and plastic packaging with sustainable alternatives to reduce the CO2 footprint. The collaboration focused on integrating Arboloom's innovative wooden cups into Feldschlösschen's event supply chain, particularly where reusable plastic cups are impractical.

Implementation

Feldschlösschen initiated a test phase using Arboloom’s compostable wooden beer cups at various events. Key milestones included:

  • October 2022: First deployment at Wankdorf Stadium in Bern during the BSC Young Boys vs. FC Sion match.
  • February - March 2023: Extensive testing during several BSC Young Boys matches at Wankdorf Stadium (Sectors B, C, D) and at the SunIce Festival in St. Moritz.

Feedback and Results

The feedback from these events has been overwhelmingly positive. Wanja Greuel, ex-CEO of BSC Young Boys, highlighted the positive reception from supporters, emphasizing the high-quality experience provided by the wooden cups and their alignment with the club's sustainability goals.

Thomas Amstutz, CEO of Feldschlösschen, praised the initiative, noting that the use of Arboloom’s wooden cups marks a significant step towards reducing plastic usage and CO2 emissions. The insights and consumer feedback gathered during the test phase are instrumental for refining the product and expanding its use across more events.

Future Plans

The ongoing tests and consumer feedback will guide the further development of Arboloom’s wooden cups. Feldschlösschen plans to extend the use of these sustainable cups to more events, reinforcing their commitment to environmental sustainability.

Conclusion

The collaboration between Feldschlösschen and Arboloom showcases a successful partnership aimed at environmental innovation. By adopting Arboloom's compostable wooden cups, Feldschlösschen is making significant strides towards a circular future, setting a benchmark for sustainability in the beverage and events industry.
